Eldon J. Stecklein

Eldon J. Stecklein, 81, of 4884 Asbury Road, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 7 p.m.

He was born on April 1, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Leo and Vera (Young) Stecklein.

He was a graduate of Holy Ghost Grade School and Dubuque Senior High School. Eldon worked for Young's Dairy as a boy.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. After returning from the service of his country, he worked as a machinist at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. for more than 20 years until his retirement.

Eldon was a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Parish.

He was an avid baseball fan and especially liked the Cardinals. When he was younger, he was a pitcher on various baseball teams in Dubuque. In these last years, Eldon enjoyed taking rides in his car.

"He was a very good guy and a wonderful brother."

Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Ethel (Fran) Schumacher, of Dubuque; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
