HOLY CROSS, Iowa -- Leon G. Clemen, 69, of Holy Cross, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following a sudden illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle and the Rev. John Ptacek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A Holy Name Society and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary will be held in the church prior to Mass. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1938, in Holy Cross, son of Leonard J. and Frances M. (Hayes) Clemen.

Upon graduating from Holy Cross High School, he served in the Navy from 1958 to 1960. After his return, he worked for Maiers Implement in Holy Cross from 1960 to 1961.

He married LaVonne A. Oberbroeckling on May 28, 1960, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg. Together they farmed outside Holy Cross for 43 years.

He was currently the secretary/treasurer of the Holy Cross/North Buena Vista Fire Association. Leon also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 881, Holy Cross Holy Name Society and Holy Cross Parish Choir. He was a former Leo High School Board president and former member of the Holy Cross Parish Council.

Leon was a loving, caring husband and father. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's plays, programs and ball games. Leon was an avid fisherman and loved taking his grandchildren fishing. He took great pride in his woodworking, making items for family and many charity auctions. Leon also enjoyed working with his son, Gary, in his construction business.

Surviving are his wife, LaVonne; a son, Gary (Kathy) Clemen, of Dubuque; three daughters, Julie (Paul) Ross, of Holy Cross, and Donna (Joe) Ahmann and Bev (Dan) Douglas, both of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Michael and Kyle Townsend, Gary and Ian Ross, Talor, Alex and Tessa Ahmann and Megan and Zachary Douglas; three sisters, Kathleen (Albert) Trenkamp, of Farley, Virginia (Bill) Juran, of Holy Cross, and Madonna (John) Weimerskirch, of Dubuque; three brothers, Edwin (Rosie), of New Vienna, Cletus (Grace), of East Dubuque, Ill., and Roger (Janey), of Holy Cross; a brother-in-law, Elmer Oberbroeckling, of Luxemburg; and two sisters-in-law, Eunice (Marvin) Prier, of Manchester, and Grace (Leon) Pasker, of New Vienna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ambrose; a brother-in-law, Lee Wedewer; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Oberbroeckling.
