Delbert H. Oberfoell

SHERRILL, Iowa - Delbert H. Oberfoell, 67, of 5220 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, in Sherrill.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m.

Mr. Oberfoell worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 23 years and at FDL/Farmland Foods for a total of more than 40 years.

He was born on April 11, 1939, in Sherrill, son of Paul and Ida (Gansemer) Oberfoell. He married Karen Hannan on May 20, 1961, in Rickardsville.

Delbert served on the Sherrill Fire Department for 18 years and was active as a Little League coach.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, talking with others and time spent with family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing its produce.

Delbert was a loving, simple man with free spirit and a good sense of humor. He was a role model and hero to his grandchildren and was looked-up to by many.

Surviving are his wife, Karen, of Sherrill; three sons, Dennis (Stephanie) Oberfoell, of Brighton, Colo., Ken (friend, Kathy Downey) Oberfoell, of Cedar Rapids, and Mark (Marcia) Oberfoell, of Dyersville; two daughters, Kris Wieseler, of Norwich, Conn., and Jodi (Chris) Harris, of Williamsport, Pa.; 12 grandchildren, Justin, Sondra, Leah, Kacy, Niki, Dalton, Cody, Sydney, Autumn, Madison, Emily and Allison; a great-grandchild, Taylor; six brothers, Jim (Lillian), Paul (Shirley), Albie, Jerry (Ruby), John (Katie) and Peter (Joan); and four sisters, Milly Scharf, Lillian (Don) Huff, Norma Jean (Martin) Hammerand and Diane (Bill) Frieman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Melvin; and three sisters, Alice Mooney, Effie Smith and Irene Greibel.

A Delbert H. Oberfoell Memorial Fund has been established.
