Matt W. Daly Murdered

Ex-Supervisor Matt W. Daly, of Dubuque was murdered early Monday morning in his home on Hill Street and his wife and niece are in very critical condition in Mercy Hospital being at the point of death because of fractures of the skull. This crime, the most brutal in criminal annuals, was committed by John A. Breywood, a clerk of Chicago, who it is claimed was infatuated with Mrs. Edna Daly, daughter-in-law of the slain man. The man who committed the murder supposed that the young woman was at her father-in-law’s home, and because of her refusals to have anything to do with him, was apparently bent on slaying her. The night of the tragedy she spent with other relatives in another part of the city.

The murderer made little or no effort to make his getaway after having slain Mr. Daly, and attempted to take the life of his wife and niece also. Following his arrest he is said to have made a confession to the Chief of Police. Breywood gained an entrance to the Daly home through the cellar window, and used the furnace shaker as a weapon of death.
