THE FIRE

At midnight last night the alarm of ? was sounded, and in the south, below the city, the whole sky was ablaze with red lurid light, and through and above it all, reaching to the stars above, was a well-defined “column of fire” that stood out in marked outline, like the tail of a comet. The fire came from Lumbert’s Mill, three miles below the city, which was said by the men who passed on the midnight freight train to be on fire.

Finding the fire was out of their reach, and no means of getting there by train, the engines did not go down. If one might judge by the column of smoke and fire, the mill must be a total wreck, with a loss that will reach well up among the thousands. At this late hour (1 o’clock) we have no means of getting other particulars.
