River newsThe Lake Superior, so long expected, got in at last at 5 p.m. There was still a larger crowd at the levee to greet her arrival than the Northwester had. Many came to see the new steamer, and doubtless others were attracted by the fact that Edwin Forrest* was a passenger on it. She is not as large as the Northwestern, but is undeniable a finer boat both in finish and build. Her commander is the old veteran Jones Worden, First Clerk, S. Grinnell. She had a very heavy load herself, and one barge in tow. She discharged about 2,500 or 3,000 packages, mostly Pittsburg wares.
Edwin Forrest (March 9, 1806 – December 12, 1872) was a prominent nineteenth-century American Shakespearean actor. His feud with the British actor William Charles Macready was the cause of the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849.
