Shocking Murder
An awful murder occurred last night at a low “doggery” in Rock Island called the Washington House.
About 9 o’clock in the evening some raftsmen and beatmen, mostly Irish assembled at the above named “hell” and their commenced their bacchanalian orgies by drinking, swearing, &c., and a row was soon started between a raftsman called James McFadden, recently from Dubuque on a raft that stopped at Moline, and the deceased called, by some Patrick Hogan.
Both parties were Irish and both drunk. McFadden drew a dirk, and struck at Hogan, who caught it in his hand and received a severe wound, nearly severing his fingers from his hands. Hogan retreated to the back part of the bar-room followed by McFadden, who then stabbed him three times in the breast killing him instantly. McFadden fled through the back door and made his escape notwithstanding there were twenty men present who might have prevented it.
$200 has been offered by the Mayor of Rock Island for the arrest and conviction of McFadden – Davenport Commercial.
