Dubuque Weekly Observer, July 8, 1854
~
There is mud, water and filth enough, accumulating on Main Street, between 5th and 6th, with the hot sun pouring its fiery rays upon it, from morning until sundown, to prepare a cauldron strong and insidious enough to effect with malaria the blood of the whole community. At 2 o’clock yesterday effluvia arising from the fetid mass, was insufferable – a few thousand appropriated to the dredging of the Dubuque’s inner slough, laid out in the improvement of our beautiful thoroughfare, Main Street, would be considered, by many citizens, laudable enterprise. City Fathers! Open your ears.
