WOMAN DROWNS IN MILL CREEK
Mrs. Ben Schumacher Meets Tragic Death Last Thursday Afternoon
Coroner's Jury Renders Verdict To The Effect That Drowning Was Accidental
Mrs. Ben Schumacher, aged 17 years, met a tragic death last Thursday, when she was drowned in Mill Creek, about seven miles northwest of Bellevue. It appears that Mrs. Schumacher and her husband, who were recently married and were visiting his folks at LaMotte, went fishing that afternoon. According to Mr. Schumacher the bank of the creek caved in and the young wife fell into eight feet of water. He hurried to LaMotte for assistance and Dr. Hanske and Wilbur Schaub and others went out from Bellevue with grappling hooks and a pulmotor. When the body was taken from the creek efforts to resuscitate it were unsuccessful.
Young Schumacher was held under suspicion by authorities, but the coroner's jury returned a verdict to the effect that the drowning was purely accidental.
Mrs. Schumacher was born in Dubuque and was the daughter of George Deyoe of that city. The lady was taken to her former home and the funeral was held Sunday afternoon, the Rev. McLaughlin officiating. The casket bearers were members of a Sunday School class of the Congregational church. Burial was made in Linwood cemetery. A number of Jackson county people were in attendance.
