By What Authority!

By what authority did D. A. MAHONY house a call for a Democratic State Convention, and especially such a call as appears in the Herald! Democrats in this city – prominent men and leading Democrats – declare that he has no authority to issue a call, and that, if he had, his is outrageous, and that they will not endorse it.

The feeling of the Union Democrats of this city will find a response, we believe, all over the State. The Lansing Mirror states that a sufficient number of traitors cannot be found in Allamakee county to form a quorum for the appointing of delegates to such a convention as MAHONY has called, and it thinks that in no county in Iowa will “the Democracy endorse the sentiments of the traitor Chairman pro tem.”

It is singular that the man who has repeatedly declared that it is for the interest of Iowa to join the Southern Confederacy; who has accused every soldier that has gone forth to fight for the old flag, and every man who is earnest in supporting the Union, of having lost his reason; and who is laboring with all his might to make some fool believe that the Federal Government is trampling upon the liberties of the people; it is singular that such a man should dare to call a convention of any party in the loyal State of Iowa. How was it done? By what authority? Is not MAHONY “subverting the personal liberties: of the members of some party in making such a call?

We assure Mr. Chairman pro tem, that he has mistaken his calling, or at least the latitude for his calls. The Tories of the Revolution went north to Canada and Nova Scotia, but he should go South. There he will find friends in abundance – a whole confederation of fellow traitors. Iowa has no further use for such scoundrels as D. A. MAHONY. The loyal people of this State can issue their own calls for Conventions, and do it without injecting a treasonable speech.
