April 4, 1861A Republican Council!
MAYOR AND MARSHAL!ELECTION went off smoothly and peaceably yesterday. A larger number of votes were polled than upon any previous election for several years. The result was generally conceded in the morning, and the tally at night confirmed our hopes. We elected STOUT, Mayor; SWIVEL, Marshal; MATTHEWS and CONNELL, Aldermen; and when we went to press, QUIGLEY and MCCANN were reported even. The only disappointment was in the defeat of FREUND in the Fifth Ward. This, it was said, was owing principally to the exertions of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. How true the report is, we cannot say. On the other officers the Democrats have beaten us; this is owing to their getting more votes than we did. The only consolation we have, is, that they elected good men, and we intend to beat them worse next time.
The prestige of success has departed from the Democracy of Dubuque. Good! Glad of it!
