William W. Haller was born Sept. 15, 1826, in Harrison Co., Virginia. William W. Haller went with his father to Vermillion Co., Illinois at the age of five. By the age of nine, W. W. was left as an orphan. He traveled with acquaintances to SW Missouri on the Indian frontier. In 1846, Mr. Haller arrived in Iowa near Keokuk. There two years were spent working the steamboat line between Dubuque and St. Louis. W. W. and Miss Jane Wilson, a native of Kentucky, were married 1846/47. By 1848 they were breaking ground near Peosta. Mr. Haller purchased a farm near Farley in 1855. With the arrival of the Civil War, Haller left his wife and six children on the farm to join the Co. F. of the 21st Iowa Volunteers. He was “stricken with a serious illness” and after month of hospitalization, returned to civilian life. W. W. farmed for fifteen years. After the death of his wife Jane, he moved into town.

William Haller was a success at whatever he undertook. He was a mechanic, contractor, wheelwright, wagon maker, and builder. Having a history of heart trouble, he died of dropsy on Nov. 9, 1907 at age 81. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery, Farley.
