Samuel A. Dutcher 1822-1904

Samuel A. Dutcher was born in 1822 in Connecticut. Samuel farmed three miles south of Farley until him and ha wife moved into town. Mrs. Caroline Dutcher died shortly after their retirement from the farm in Nov. 1880. Samuel was active in civil concerns of Farley. He was a councilman in the 1880’s, street commissioner, city assessor in 1888, and was involved at St. George's Church’s. Mr. Dutcher was a Civil War veteran serving in the 21st Iowa Infantry as a sutler*, furnishing weary soldiers with small luxuries of comfort during their long marches. S. A. Dutcher died in Nov. of 1904 following a lengthily illness at the age of 82 year. His body was transferred by train to the fam9ily plot in Galena, Illinois for burial.

*: A person who sold provisions, liquor, etc., to the troops. A small tradesman.
