Charles Connell was born July 26, 1861, as the second of seven children of Michael and Catherine Serry Connell, both natives of Ireland. Charles W. Connell grew to manhood here. At the age of 24 he began carrying mail between Farley and Cascade by buying out the mail and stage route in June 1886. After two years he opened a buffet and saloon in Farley which along with other enterprises kept him busy for a number of years. In 1902, Charles became the owner of 358 acres of property on which he farmed and raised stock. Charles devoted a good deal of time to raisiing Percheron horses, short-horned cattle, Poland-China and Duroc Jersey hogs. In 1917 he built the brick building standing west of the present bank at the SW corner of 1st Street and 4th Avenue. The structure was rented and used for various business ventures. He married Martha F. Keefe in 1891. Martha was born on Feb. 4, 1869; the fourth of eleven children of Daniel and Ellen Hogan Keefe. Charles Connell died May 26, 1929, at age 68. Martha died Aug 4, 1941. They were buried at the Catholic Church in Farley. The six Connell children were: Walter J., Pauline E., John Harold, Charles W., Francis M., and Florence M.
