John Augustin Barry was born at Bankston, Iowa on April 14, 1867, the son of Richard and Catherine Barry. John grew up learning farm work and was educated in the schools at Hickory Valley. He graduated from Highland Park College in Des Moines as a pharmacist in 1897. On Nov. 2, 1897 John bought the drug business of W. V. Oldridge, moving the stock to a room in the Loomis Hotel Building. In 1898, Charles Callahan joined John in a business partnership which lasted through the turn of the century, when John Barry again held the practice alone. Needing rest because he suffered from tuberculosis, Mr. Barry went to visit his sister Mrs. Owen McMahon in Masonville. He died at her home twelve days later on July 2, 1908.

Hundreds of people met his body at the depot where the casket was opened and they had a few minutes of farewell. Twenty-five teams led the hearse to Bankston with 150 vehicles in line following as an escort. John was buried near his parents at St. Clements cemetery.
