Samuel Louis & Mary (Durst) Streif

The son of Peter and Fredericka Streif. Samuel L. Streif lived with his parent until age 21. Samuel began farming when he rented 160 acres from his father. He rented three years before purchasing the place. After two additional years, Samuel sold the property and 40 acres he had improved just west of Farley. He then moved to Sioux Valley, Trent, South Dakota for seven years. At this time Samuel went to Coffeeville, Kansas; Washington State and Sioux City, Iowa. A bit over nine years from leaving Farley, he returned to a farm in Section 7 in Taylor Township. He additionally owned land in Iowa Township.

Samuel Streif had a reputation of having a fine and modern farm. He was a breeder of Herefordshire cattle, Duroc-Jersey hogs and Norman and Clyde horses. He had 32 milk cows with separators on each of his farms. He separated his own milk and cream sending it to the Co-op creamer in Farley.

In 1886, Samuel married Mary Ann Durst, daughter of Gabriel and Christina Hosh Durst. She was of Gabriel’s second family and one of fourteen children.

Mary Durst’s parents had come to this country from Switzerland in the spring of 1870, settling first in Tennessee. In 1875, the Durst family came to Dubuque County, where they remained five years before moving to Coffeeville, Kansas. In Kansas Mr. and Mrs. Durst died.

Samuel Streif lived from 1864-1918

After his death, Mary carried on with responsibilities of family and local community. She was one of the founders of the local Red Cross during WWI. Mary was renowned for her knitting she did for the troops. To Samuel Louis and Mary Durst Streif the following children were born: Peter, Emma Bartman, Laura Cooksley, Ida, Rose Streif, Glen, Mable Nebel, Albert, Laurence, Samuel Jr., Robert Lee and Mary Nebel.
