Michael Murphy was born in Ireland. He came to the U. S. in 1855. He was accompanied by his brother Joe, and their friend James Ore. They worked their way to this area by working in lumber camps and brick yards. They walked from Memphis, Tennessee to Cascade and on to Dubuque to work in the mines.

Michael married Catherine Bell on Nov. 9, 1866 at St. Patrick’s Church, Dubuque,

They purchased farm land with gold they had saved.

Two children were born to this union: Rosetta (Rose) and John. When the children were three and six their mother Catherine died.

In 1879, Michael married Jane Cunningham. Three sons and two daughters were born to this union. Joseph lived in Farley.
Michael retired from farming and lived in Farley. He died at age 85.
