Emily Fitzgerald came to Farley in 1869. Emily was born in 1812 in Garnovilla, Co. Tipperary, Ireland to Richard and Catherine Nagle. She was blessed with fine musical talent. She was a composer. Emily married John Fitzgerald, the oldest son of Capt. Fitzgerald of the Royal Navy, who was a native of Bally Kenelley, Ireland.* The Fitzgerald's came to America in 1852. The family lived three years near Milwaukee before dwelling in Dubuque County. John Fitzgerald died while living in the city of Dubuque and was buried in the old cemetery behind St. Raphael’s Cathedral. About a year following John’s death, Emily moved to Farley. Near this time, she endured the death of her youngest son. After his burial, Emily had her husband’s remains transferred to to the Catholic Cemetery at Farley. The known Fitzgerald children are: Mrs. P. F. Cunningham (Catherine) of Farley, born 1844 in Ireland – died 1908 – buried in Catholic Cemetery, Farley; Mrs. Ed Fitzpatrick (Mary) of Farley, died 1894 – buried in Catholic Cemetery, Farley; Mrs. Thomas (Emily) McGuaran of Denver, born Bally Kenelly, Co. Cork, Ireland – Aug. 17, 1888, age 42 – buried in Catholic Cemetery, Farley; Fritz, R. M. of Farley.

Emily Fitzgerald passed away ten minutes after the arrival at her bedside of daughter Emily, who came home to be with her mother. Mrs. Fitzgerald died in July 1886.

*The Fitzgerald family was considered nobility in the old country and were known for their acitinity in the Dominion.
