Dubuque Telegraph Herald, March 18, 1933

Frank M. Van Valkenburg, pioneer Dubuque business man, died at the family home, 420 Bradley Avenue, at 4:45 o’clock Friday afternoon after a lingering illness. Although Mr. Van Valkenburg had been in poor health his condition became critical only a short time ago.

Mr. Van Valkenburg was born in Dubuque Oct. 12, 1859, and resided here his entire life-time. He married Anna Jacobs on May 8, 1885, who with two daughters, Mrs. H. L. Northup, Seattle and Mrs. J. H. Watters, Dubuque, a son, Melvin C. Van Valkenburg, also of Dubuque, two brothers, Fred of Estherville, Ia., and George of Waukegan, Ill., and five grandchildren survive.

As a young man Mr. Van Valkenburg learned the sheet metal trade from the late Mr. Yates, and 40 years ago established his place of business at First and Locust Streets, where he was actively engaged until failing health caused his retirement two years ago.

Because of his mild and happy disposition he won for himself a host of friends. His kindness and understanding made him an ideal husband, father and friend.
