SNUG IN THE SEWER
~
The Comfortable Subterranean Quarters
Of Three Tramps Discovered
~
Three tramps were discovered yesterday very comfortably located in the Eleventh Street sewer near its mouth. Owing to the drought of the past month the bottom of the sewer was dry. It was carpeted with a bed of light sand, and the way the tramps had things fixed up it was evident they had been there several days, and were prepared to stay until driven out by a freshet. One of them is about 30 years old, another about 26, and the third is a boy about 18. Inspector O’Brien on entering the sewer yesterday stumbled over a bushel of potatoes. After this, when he explored the place with Officer Carter and another policemen, four turkeys and three live chickens, three dressed chickens and considerable provisions were found. The tramps were taken to the calaboose. A skiff found in the slough at the mouth of the sewer indicated that the cave dwellers had been making raids on poultry yards in Illinois and Wisconsin.
