CHECK FOR A MILLION
~
It Was Among the Contents of the
Finley Hospital Contributions
Boxes
~
The Finley Hospital contribution boxes which had been placed in banks and other public places during the past two or three weeks were gathered in yesterday. President Rumpf opened the boxes at the office of Dr. Ruete. In each there was the usual miscellaneous collection of matches, buttons, tin tags, etc., but as well quite a few nickels, dimes, quarters and other coins, the total being a considerable sum. In emptying one of the boxes Mr. Rumpf found a piece of paper folded up. It bore the appearance of a bank check. The flush of elation came over Fred’s cheeks as he unfolded the paper, thinking some philanthropist had taken that method of contributing $50 or $100. The check read: “The Dubuque National Bank will pay Finley Hospital or order $1,000,000 – Jay Gould.”

Mr. Rumpf has not yet presented the check for collection.
