Delegation From Jamestown Call
On Mayor Berg for Assistance
~
Because there is no ferry running across the Mississippi River at Eagle Point the farmers in southern Wisconsin are obliged to travel nine miles over a rough road in order to get into Dubuque. Consequently, they are criticizing Capt. Kimball, the owner of the Eagle Point Ferry.

A delegation of farmers from Jamestown called on Mayor Berg this morning and complained that Capt. Kimball refuses to run his ferry boat until June 1st. The farmers asked the mayor to lay the matter before the city council for the purpose of having someone engaged to operate a ferry. The mayor received the delegation cordially telling them that he would gladly take their grievance to the council.

Capt. Kimball, the owner of the ferry is in possession of a charter to protect his ferry business from competition. It is very possible that the council will revoke his charter and will give it to someone else.

The business that comes from Wisconsin to uptown business men is considerable and one man should not be able to stand in the way of keeping it from the city.

Mayor Berg has a letter from Capt. W. C. Collins from Buffalo, Iowa in which the latter purposes to operate a first class ferry boat from the levee to East Dubuque if the privilege is given him. He asks for no bonus. The council will grant his request.
