Mayor Berg, twenty policemen and a mob of a hundred people clashed in front of the City Hall about 7 o’clock. For a short time chaos reigned supreme. Cool heads restored order.

The trouble originated over the shattering of a large window in Henry Trenkle’s meat market, 1227 Clay Street. The owner of the shop informed the police of the occurrence and named a well-known young man as the one who did it. Officer Scherr was detailed to arrest the young man who at the time was in Golinvaux’s saloon with a crowd of friends. When Officer Scherr put the young man under arrest there was a loud protest. So loud was the shouting that it looked as if a riot was imminent.

When he reached the city prison Officer Scherr called for help and twenty policemen and Mayor Berg responded. The presence of such a large number of blue coats attracted hundreds of people to the scene. The prisoner was finally put into a cell. Later in the evening he was released. This morning, however, a warrant for issued for his arrest. He will be charged with intoxication and disorderly conduct.
