A SOLIDER GARROTED AND ROBBED - On Friday night a returned solider, by the name of James Bartell, while partially under the influence of liquor was garroted and robbed of between four and five hundred dollars. The circumstances of the case as they appeared upon examination before Justice Cantillon, yesterday, were as follows: Bartell whose home in Decatur, Illinois, came to this city, on Friday evening, with a friend in the 6th Minnesota regiment, and during the evening visited a saloon in the lower part of town where a dance was in progress. He treated the company liberally. Lanty Cahill and James O’Halloran were not long in making his acquaintance, and were soon on the most intimate terms with him. Bartell, after one of his general treats, told the landlord he would go out for a moment and return and pay for the drinks, which he did, laying a five dollar bill on the counter. After talking some time, he finally went out in company with Cahill and O’Halloran, but after some time had elapsed, returned, and said he had been robbed by these men. It seems that when they got to the foot of near Main Street Cahill and O’Halloran garroted him, pulled his boots off and took therefrom his money. Cahill was arrested, yesterday morning, and brought before Justice Cantillon for examination. O’Halloran could not be found as he had evidentially taken alarm and sloped. Cahill was bound over to appear at the next term of court, in the sum of $800, and procured bonds for that amount. Bartell was also held to appear as a witness against him, and Mr. Lyon, his attorney, went his bail. W. J. Knight appeared for the defense.
