Dubuque Democratic Herald – May 4, 1865

EXAMINATION OF WHITE FOR MANSLAUGHTER – Michael White who was engaged in the stabbing affray Monday night with McLain, was brought before Justice Cantillon Wednesday afternoon for examination. The serious nature of the affray, the doubtful recovery of McLain and the extensive acquaintances of both parties called together a large number of their friends and a crowd of the curious, and the court room was well filled. The prosecution was conducted by D. E. Lyon for the State and the defense by Wm. J. Knight. The facts brought out by the testimony of were much the same as these already published; it was shown to be more a drunken brawl between two friends in which one was injured than seriously, but still without any malice. The Judge, therefore, placed his bail at for $1000 for appearance at the District Court, which amount was already obtained and he was released.
The symptoms of McLain yesterday were better, and little doubt is now felt that he will recover.
