Dubuque Democratic Herald – May 2, 1865

A STABBING AFFRAY – Two intoxicated miners, Dan McLain and Michael White had an altercation last evening on First Street, during which knives were used freely, one of the party being stabbed in the cheek and the other in the wrist from which wounds the blood flowed profusely. The parties had been on a friendly stroll during the afternoon, and falling out about some trivial matter came to blows in the evening. The Marshall and his Deputy were standing on the corner of Second and Main Streets, and hearing the rumpus, hurried to the spot, where they found the combatants lying on the street covered with mud and blood. They were taken to Dr. Staple’s where their wounds were dressed and found to be not of a serious nature. The affray will have a legal investigation when the parties are able to stand trial.
P. S. – Since the above was written we learn that McLain was seriously stabbed in the side, and it is feared he will die.
