Peter Ferring, Sr. was born in 1836 in Prussia and emigrated to America in 1850 at the age of 14 temporarily settling in Galena, Ill. That same year he moved to Dubuque. After reaching manhood he became involved in the mercantile business. On January 28, 1860, he married Ellen Brommenschenkel, a native of Prussia also. They were parents of seven children of whom four survived. There are two son, Peter Jr. of New Vienna and Frank of Dubuque. Two daughters, Rose also of Dubuque and Mrs. Ben Schemmel of Dyersville.

While living in Dubuque he served as county sheriff for several years. While in New Vienna he became an active partner with Andrea Baeumle in the New Vienna Brewery in 1874. Some years later he became the sole owner of the brewery until the year 1890 when it was sold out. He then returned to Dubuque to open a grocery store and once again serve as county sheriff. He held both of these positions until his death in 1897.
