ROBBERY AND THEFT

Money, Brandy, and a Pistol
Stolen – Driscoll and Devine

As it is well known, Jerry Driscoll walks the streets under bonds for his appearance at the Supreme Court. Generally speaking a criminal should be on his good behavior during the term of probation, but such is not the case with Jerry, who has lost all sympathy with the public, if he ever had any. His last exploit makes him a dangerous character to run at large. Yesterday in company with Bob Devine, he entered Bob McGivern’s saloon, corner of Locust and Eighth Streets, while the proprietor was absent. A small boy was in attendance. Watching their opportunity the two visitors slipped behind the counter, rifled the money drawer, of its contents, took a pistol and bottle of brandy and left. They went about town, entered several saloons, stood treat for all present, and all at once were flush with funds. On the return of Mr. McGivern he missed his property and suspected the thieves. Shortly after Devine slipped into the saloon from a side door and fell asleep in the back room, stupefied from the effects of liquor with the identical bottle stolen projecting from his inside pocket. Here was evidence conclusive. At another saloon the pistol was exhibited and all traces of the worthy visitors lost. During the evening Driscoll was arrested near the Central market after he had run down a harmless and inoffensive wood sawyer, breaking his nose and beating him unmercifully, and had given battle to Officer Farrell, who captured the battering ram on the war path. Jerry is a dangerous character to run at large, and will someday be guilty of murder unless he changes his course. He is the “Rocky Ryan” of the present age, and is the terror of the community. The prisoner will be arraigned this for trial with proof to convict at once.
