Susan Janis Peelen

April 10, 1949 -- May 15, 2014

Susan Janis Peelen, age 65, of Okoboji, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, after a brief battle with cancer at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was born on April 10, 1949, in Primghar, to Merle and Leona (Lohff) Haye.

Susan graduated from Sutherland High School in 1967, and from the St. Luke's School of Nursing at Morningside College in 1970, as a registered nurse. She worked as a registered nurse for over 40 years, including 27 years at Village Northwest in Sheldon. Susan was united in marriage to David Peelen on June 25, 1971, in Sutherland.

Susan was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park, where she was the church treasurer and played the piano for many services. She enjoyed spending her spare time playing the piano, photography, boating, fishing and learning new technologies. Susan's true passion in life was her family!

Susan is survived by her husband, David Peelen of Okoboji; daughter, Holly Chase and her husband, Guy of Minneapolis; son, Matthew Peelen, and his partner, Tamala of Seattle; grandson, Sebastian David Chase; granddaughter, Sophia Chase; mother, Leona Haye of Spirit Lake; brother, Mike Haye, and his wife, Jan of Wall Lake; niece and nephews, Adam, Jenna and Brady; and a special friend, Sue Starkenburg of Sheldon. She was preceded in death by her father, Merle Haye; and an aunt, Opal Kaiser.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Schuchert Funeral Home. Burial was at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery.

The Schuchert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
