George Elston, Last Park
Civil War Veteran
The invisible line of marching men,
"the Boys of '61," were joined early
Wednesday morning by George Els-
ton, the last veteran of the Civil War
in Arnolds Park. He had been a well-
known figure here to residents and
tourists, young and old, for nearly a
half century. He was 85 years old.
George Elston, too young to enlist
at the beginning of the war, was accepted
as a private in Company B.,
Forty-fifth regiment, Illinois Volunteer
Infantry, April 4, 1864. He enlisted
from Joe Davis county where
he was born February 15, 1845.
Accompanying his regiment he took
part in the siege of Atlanta and
marched with Sherman to the sea.
He also took part in the campaign of
The Carolinas including Pocotaligo,
South. Carolina, Fayetteville, Bentonville,
and Goldsboro. He was in the
grand review at Washington, D. C.,
May 24, 1865, following the war and
was honorably discharged at Chicago,
July 12, 1865. He was a member of
the G. A. R. at Milford.
In 1869 he was married to Inez
Woodworth and passed their golden
wedding anniversary before her death
in 3919. They came to the lakes and
settled here in the fall 1881 preceeding
the railroad.
Ten children were born to them, all
Surviving but a son, Fred, who died
in 1918. Those remaining are: Frank
of Okoboji, Miss Inez, M. P., G. H.,
M. G., Clayton, Mrs. Glen Pugh, L. P.,
and Miss Marcia, all of Arnolds Park.
He. is also survived by three sisters,
Mrs. Anne Simmons of Kansas, Mrs.
Eleanora Stevens and Mrs. Alzine
McKee of Warren, IllinoisThe funeral will be held at the home
at 2:30 p. m. Friday. Burial will be
beside his wife and son in the Okoboji
Cemetery. The Legion will be in charge.
