George Henderson Dies; Final Rites Held on Saturday

Funeral services for George L. Henderson, 81, were held Saturday at the Harpole-Tenold Chapel with the Rev. Fred I. Peters of Grace Lutheran Church officiating.

Mr. Henderson died Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Veteran's Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

George Leroy Henderson, the son of Torkel L. and Henni Thompson Henderson, was born Feb. 3, 1892 at Story City, Iowa. They lived in Story County and he attended school there. He enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 20, 1917, and served with the infantry until his discharge on June 9, 1919. He attained the rank of Sergeant.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, and a 50-year member of the American Legion (Gold Service Card)

He was united in marriage to Emma Matilda Omvig on Oct. 22, 1923 at Spirit Lake. They made their home on several farms in the Lake Park and Spirit Lake area. To this union five children were born.

He is survived by three sons, Harold, Don and George, all of Spirit Lake; two daughters, Lila of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Luella, Mrs. Gordon Anderson of Spirit Lake; seven grandchildren; two brothers and one sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1967 and one brother and one sister.

Interment was in Lakeland Memory Gardens with military graveside rites conducted by the Lake Park Legion and Spirit Lake VFW and Auxiliary.
