— Grace Werkhoven —
– Services for Grace Werkhoven, 81, Spirit Lake, were 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, 1990, at the Turner Funeral Home, Spirit Lake. Rev. John J. Oren officiated. Music was provided by Mary Lou Ayres, organist and Bob Cosens, soloist. He sang "How Great Thou Art," and "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers were Jim Groen, Gary Haan, Brian Handy, Tom Kuhlman, Scott Walmer and Steve Weed.
– Mrs. Werkhoven died Friday, March 9, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Spirit Lake.
– She was born Sept. 11, 1908*, at Rock Rapids to Fred and Verna (Schoeneman) Busse. She graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1928.
– She married Calvin (Red) Werkhoven Dec. 18, 1930**, at Rock Rapids. They operated restaurants in Rock Rapids and North Dakota, before moving to Spirit Lake in 1963*** where they owned The Grill and The Dutch Lunch.
– She attended the Methodist Church and later years the Kingdom Hall. She especially enjoyed traveling and shopping.
– Survivors include one son, Robert Werkhoven, Valley City, N. D.; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Bakke, Spirit Lake and Mrs. Gail (Shirley) Handy, Spencer; one sister, Sophie Haan, Rock Rapids; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
– She was preceded in death by her husband in 1970, a grandson, a great-grandson and one brother, Raymond.
– Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Spirit Lake. Turner Funeral Home, Spirit Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
*Note--This date agrees with her death record. It disagrees by one year with her SSDI listing (1907).
**Note--Grace appears on the 1930 C. in Jelle Werkhoven's household as his daughter-in-law, 21 yrs old having married at 19.
***Note--The migration pattern in Grace's obit varies from that in her husband Calvin's. Perhaps the "6" and "3" were reversed? A final move to Spirit Lake in 1936 would jive better with the "facts" reported in Calvin's obit, but this still needs to be proven correctly.
