This query is probably for Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa and not Des Moines County, Iowa.

I looked to see if I could help you on your elusive brick wall. Evelyn Hampton's mother died in Norwalk, Warren County, Iowa according to the SSDI; It appears that she is buried in Highland Memory Gardens cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. I checked their records and located the following:

Evelyn A. Smith Mauk buried February 13, 1974
Merlin E. Mauk buried July 6, 1993

SSDI - nothing for Evelyn
SSDI and Iowa Birth records -- Merlin Emery Mauk, born November 22, 1924 in Shenandoah, Page, Iowa to Verner J. Mauk and Clara R. Merkle Mauk; Died July 2, 1993, Polk County, Iowa.

The Des Moines Register on February 11 and 12, 1974 had only a funeral notice that a service would be held on Wednesday, February 13, 1974 at 12:00 noon at Hamilton's Funeral Home with burial in Highland Memory Gardens for Evelyn A. Mauk of 1652 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines.
