looking for long lost babcock family

My family has been searching for many years for the true whereabouts of an ancestor believed to have once been adopted. all we know is from a 1900's census in Wisconsin. that Earl (f.or m.) Babcock was born Sept. 1885 in Iowa. His father came from New York, his mother from Illinois. would anyone know of a free database that could have this information? I just want to know if it somewhere in Iowa. I would come to get a copy.
