Wendall or wendel ancestors

My gr-great grandmother, Margaret Wendall (or Wendel) was born in Burlington, Iowa Feb. 8, 1843. She never talked much about her family other than to relate she had 9 siblings who died with her parents of the black death or plaque. She was the only survivor. She came back to Pennsylvania and married George Messersmith. My Mom believes Margaret's father was an immigrant from Germany who was a doctor. Any help in ferreting out this family would be appreciated.
