S. G. MATHEWS PASSES AWAY

Funeral to Be Held Thursday Afternoon for Former Pickle
Company Salesman

Sterling G. Mathews, 71, Resident of Burlington 48 years, died at Burlington hospital last night after an extended illness.
He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., June 30, 1867, and was married here July 2, 1891 to Emily Gawthrop. He was a salesman for the former Burlington Pickle Works for 30 years.

Mr. Mathews was a member of First Methodist church, United Commercial Travelers, Modern Woodman of America and of Des Moines Lodge No. 1, Masons. He was formerly active in the U.C.T.
Surviving are: his widow; two daughters, Mrs. H.L. Martin of Hinsdale, Ill., and Mrs. Ray A. McCauslin of Ft. Madison; three brothers, A.G. Mathews of Burlington, John Mathews of Champaign, Ill. and Samuel Mathews of Rockford, Ill.; and five grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death.
Services will be held from the Burnett-Wallen funeral home at 3 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. E.L. Stone, pastor of Grace Methodist, in the absence of Dr. W.T. Smith if First Methodist church. Interment will be in Aspen Grove cemetery.
