Oran L. Wagler

Mr. Oran L. Wagler, 95, of Burlington died at 5:49 p.m. Monday, March 27, 2017 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born February 9, 1922 in Des Moines County, he was the son of Samuel and Jennie (Carithers) Wagler. His mother died when he was three years old and he was raised by his father and step mother, Tillie (Walker) Wagler. On June 16, 1946 he married Darline Hummer in West Burlington. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2014.

Mr. Wagler graduated from Hunter School, a rural Burlington one-room school. Mr. Wagler was an Army World War II veteran serving at the rank of corporal in Africa and Italy. After the war he had the opportunity to hitch a ride on an Army plane to France to see his brother who was also serving in the Army. He worked as a machinist for Burlington Northern Railroad for 42 years.

Mr. Wagler was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and then attended Zion United Church of Christ, Mainliners, Railroad Vets, Machinists Union, and Hawkeye Natives Organization.

He enjoyed Tuesday night bingo at the Burlington Senior Center, gardening, traveling, mowing the yard, and watching the Rosebush Garden rabbit.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard Wagler of Blue Grass and Darrell (Carrie) Wagler of Burlington; two daughters, Sandra (James) Levins of Burlington and Rhonda Thacker of Columbia, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one daughter in infancy Barbara Ann Wagler, two brothers Art and Gal, one sister Bernice, and two step sisters Edith and Marciele.

Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, March 31st, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Wagler will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1st, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Brice Hughes officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Senior Center.
