HENRY HERMANN DEAD
Veteran Merchant Passed Away Sunday Morning.
Henry Hermann, one of Burlington's oldest business men, passed away Sunday morning at his home No. 921 South Seventh street after a long and painful illness. The deceased was a native of the Fatherland, but came to this country as a young man, locating in Burlington in 1856. The city remained his home to the end. For many years he was known as one of the city's leading shoe dealers. In German circles he was known as one of the prominent members of the German Evangelical church. He was a good business man and succeeded in accumulating considerable property. Some ten or fifteen years ago he purchased from the heirs, the beautiful home of Senator Grimes, and he was never so happy as when at work, keeping up the handsome place. He was a pleasant companion, a man who read considerable and took great interest in public affairs, while not actively participating there in.
He leaves the widow and ten children: Five sons, Arthur, Oscar, Clarence, Henry* (Harry*) and Chester; five daughters, Mrs. Ed Rapp of Burlington, Mrs. Emma Calkins and Miss Gertie Hermann, of Hollister, Cal.,Misses Daisy and Pearl Hermann here. (Note: we have not been able to identify who this Pearl was--the Gazette did not list Pearl and we have no birth or death date for a Pearl-since Grace Hermann was not listed she might have been this Pearl, it being a nickname. Grace was born in 1887. )
Added to the information in The Burlington Gazette was that Henry opened the shoe store in 1871 (and did so with J. Jacob Herman, his brother who died in 1876 when Henry ran the store after)
Added to the listed in the Gazette as surviving him were his brothers, "Assessor, Fred Hermann of this city; John Herman of Mediapolis (Ia.)and John Henry Herrmann of Brisbane, Australia." The funeral services were held on Feb. 23,1904, from his home with the Rev. Hermann of the German Evangelical church, "of which the deceased was one of the founders and a constant attendant," officiating and assisted by Rev. Long of the Christian church.
