Robert "Sonny" Simms, 82, of Burlington, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at the Broward Health North in Pompano Beach, FL.

Born April 8, 1932, in Burlington, he was the son of Richard and LaRue Pohren Simms. On February 11, 1983, he married Nancy Woods in Burlington.

In his younger years, Sonny was a route driver for Midwest Biscuit Co. and later for Balbort Beverage Co., that became Golden Eagle Distributing. He retired as the warehouse manager.

He was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School.

He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1950 until 1953.

He was a member of the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League Detachment 616, V.F.W. Post 10102, American Legion Post 52, Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard, 40 & 8 where he was Chef de Gare, and he was active with Toys for Tots. He enjoyed golfing, watching the Chicago Cubs, traveling, gardening, yard work, and he especially cherished spending time with friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Simms of Burlington; one daughter, Karen (Chris) Kamburis of The Woodlands, TX; one son, Mark (Ann) Simms of Albia, IA; five grandchildren, Christopher Bonar, Aaron Simms, Andy Simms, Alex Hestilow, Carly Kamburis; three great-grandchildren, Quentin Bonar, Maxim Hestilow, Avery Simms; one sister, Juanita Schoell of Alrington Heights, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, LuAnn Simms.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, February 23, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Simms will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League Detachment 616 and Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Carman Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Memorials have been established for the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard and Mississippi Valley Veteran's Memorial.
