Helen Valene Nelson, 89, of Mediapolis, died Saturday, November 11, 1995, at the Morning Sun Care Center.

Born September 4, 1906, at Danville, she was the daughter of John R. and Olive Coad Sawtell. She married C. Bennard Nelson January 6, 1926, at Danville.

She was a graduate of Danville High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Mediapolis, the Gideon's Auxiliary, the Order of Eastern Star No. 226, the Kings Daughters, the Study Club, and the Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Geraldine V. Nelson of Mediapolis; one son, Marlin L. Nelson of both Seattle, Washington, and Seoul, Korea; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne Sawtell of Palisade, Colorado.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Nelson will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis, with the Reverend H. Dick Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the benefit of the Gideons.
