George G. Walker, 90 Mediapolis, Dies
Mediapolis (IA) -- George G. Walker, one of the founders of the Mediapolis Chautauqua association and long-time president of the organization, died February 21 at his home in Mediapolis. He was 90 years old.
Walker was a native of Scotland county, Missouri, where he was born July 3, 1858. With his parents, Isaac and Hannah Friend Walker, he came to Des Moines county in childhood. The remainder of his life was spent in this county. He lived for many years on a farm north of Kossuth, retiring and moving into town in 1918.
Walker was married to Matilda Wischmeier on March 9, 1886. To them 8 children were born: Boyd I., Walker, Detroit; Mrs. W. E. Brun, Danville; Roy C. Walker, Ames; Forrest G. Walker, Mediapolis; Mrs. A. A. Jackson, Kalona; Mrs. Austin McDonald, Morning Sun, Frances and Lillian Walker, both of whom died in infancy.
Walker leaves 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his services to the Chautauqua association, Walker was active in numerous other civic and community affairs. He served as a member of the town council, and as a member of the Methodist church, taught for many years in the Sunday school and also served on the official board of the church. For many years he was an officer of the Mediapolis Telephone company.
Services will be held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in Kossuth cemetery, which adjoins Walker's former farm home.
