George J. Houtz, 85, of Wapello, formerly of Burlington, died at 1:15 PM Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born August 28, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of George Henry and Lorinda Fern Umphrey Houtz. On July 19, 1948, he married Betty Jane Schindall in Waterloo. George worked as a welder for Iowa Southern Utilities and worked in Maintenance for Georgia-Pacific. He enjoyed woodworking and welding, and he loved to watch boxing. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Houtz of Wapello; four daughters, Linda S. (Russell Hopping) Houtz of Oakville, Judy Houtz of Minooka, IL, Cyndi (Bob) Zimmerman of Naperville, IL, and Karen (Dan) McConahay of Wapello; one son, David (Mary) Houtz of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and one grandson. There will be no visitation. The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Houtz will be 1:00 PM Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
