Mr. Philip Arthur Paule, 89, lifelong resident of Burlington died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Great River Medical Center - Klein Center.
Born July 6, 1925 in Burlington, he was the son of Albert Jacob and Esther Louise (Reusch) Paule. On June 15, 1958 he married H. Arlene Wallingford in Mount Pleasant. She preceded him in death on April 19, 2010.
Mr. Paule was a Naval Aviator serving at the rank of Captain, entering the service on April 9, 1943 and discharged from the Naval Reserve on July 6, 1985. While he was in service he attended Murray State Teachers College in Athens, Georgia and was a 1948 graduate of University of Iowa.
Mr. Paule was the Industrial Relations Manager for J.I. Case for 30 years, retiring in 1979. He was of the Christian faith and a life member of Zion United Church of Christ where he served in many capacities including Financial Secretary, Elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and president of the Consistory. He was a member of Burlington Toastmasters, Kiwanis, Cascade Boating Association and Burlington Golf Club. He served two terms on the Burlington School Board, was past president of YMCA Board, served on the new building committee for the YMCA, past president of Burlington Jaycees, served on the Jaycees sponsored Aviation Days, Board of Directors for Community Chest, District Chairman of Boy Scouts of America, and a member of Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid duck hunter and a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan. He will be remembered most as a man who lived honoring God by serving his church, his country and his community, and by being a faithful son, husband, brother and father.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Mark) Sundberg of Lacey, Washington and Joan (James) McGee of Dunlap, Illinois; five grandchildren, Ryan and Eric Sundberg, and Lauren, John, and Samuel McGee; two sisters, Mildred Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska and Lorraine Bray of Martinez, California; and one brother, Milton Paule of Burlington. He was proceeded in death by one sister, Celestine Buesch formerly of Tacoma, Washington.
The family is very grateful for the exceptional care Phil and Arlene received from Dr. Tracy Bell and the entire staff and volunteers of the Klein Center over the past 18 years.
Friends may call from 1 until 8 p.m. Friday, October 24th, at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. Paule will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 25th, at Zion United Church of Christ with Rev. Brice Hughes officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
