William D. "Bill" Horst, 59, of West Burlington, died at 12:07 PM Sunday, October 12, 2014, at his home.

Born March 4, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of William Robert and Dorothy Louise Hawkins Horst. On March 13, 1982, he married MaryAnn Fagan in Colorado Springs, CO. They later divorced.

Bill farmed with his brother-in-law, Dacid and also worked at Casey's in Middletown.

He was a 1973 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1999 graduate of Indian Hills Community College with a degree in Computer Programming.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1980 until 1986.

He enjoyed photography, fishing, gardening, woodworking, genealogy, and target shooting. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include one son, William Edward (Mayumi) Horst of Japan; one grandson, Luca Horst; two sisters, Nancy Crowell of Kennewick, WA, and Janet L. (Alan) Baird of Sperry, IA; one brother-in-law, Dacid (Marcia) Wagner of West Burlington; five nieces, Lindsay, Kara, Lesley, Renee, and Rebekah; two nephews, Brian and Jamie; four great-nieces, Gabriella, Gretchen, Hollie and Olivia; and seven great-nephews, Austin, Kyle, Max, Kasen, Wyatt, Gabriel, and Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marilyn; one niece, Betsy and his grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Monday, October 20, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends.

The memorial service for Mr. Horst will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 20, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Carr officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for his grandson's education or a charity of the donor's choice.
