Wanda Marie Helling, 87, of Burlington, died at 1:41 AM Monday, October 13, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Born January 12, 1927, in West Point, IA, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Marie A. Fedler Schmidt. On May 30, 1949, she married James A. Helling in Fort Madison. He died October 22, 2002.
Wanda worked for eight years in Lee Co. Treasurer Office in Fort Madison.
She was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a volunteer at Great River Medical Center. She enjoyed her grandchildren, playing golf, bridge and reading.
Survivors include two sons, David G. (Joan) Helling of Wauwatosa, WI, and Thomas J. (Leah) Helling of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Schmidt of Ft. Madison; one sister Audrey Kipp of Fort Madison; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, and one great granddaughter, Remi Helling.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM Saturday, October 18, 2014, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington where the family will receive friends.
The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Helling will be 1:00 PM Saturday, October 18, 2014, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Drake Restaurant following the burial.
A memorial has been established for Burlington Notre Dame Foundation.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the entire staff at Rosebush Gardens for their care and compassion over the past two years.
