Delbert Milton Diercks, 89, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

Born on June 28, 1925 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Milton and Mary J. Rehm Diercks. He married Bonnie Jean Remaly on March 27, 1948 in Burlington, Iowa.

Delbert saw action with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic Theater during WWII as a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class from 1943-1946. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 31 years. He was Past Patron of E.C. Blackmar Chapter #306, Masonic Temple, Davenport Consistory; Past Master and 51 year member of Des Moines Lodge #1, Kaaba Shriners, National A.L.C. #222, member of N.A.R.F.E. and the American Legion. He was president of the Board of Directors of the Des Moines County Postal Credit Union, on the mayor’s advisory committee for low rent housing and president of the advisory board for Friedenheim Community.

He was a member of Gold Wing Road Riders, Golden Wish Committee and American Motorcycle Association.. He called Bingo for the Steamboat Center, and was president of the Golden Oldies for many years. Delbert enjoyed walking, visiting with people, a good cup of coffee, his family and especially his great-grandson Baily. He was a longtime member of Zion United Church of Christ; member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and associate member of the Church of the Painted Hills, Tucson, Arizona. He currently was a member of First Christian Church (DOC).

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; one son, Ronald (Donna) Diercks of Burlington; three daughters, Jeri (Dean) Moberg of Burlington, Rebecca Kemp of Burlington, and Amy Jo Martin of Greeley, Colorado; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Barbara Diercks; two sons-in-law, J.K. Martin and Sterling Scott; and one grandson, Carl Mundt.

The memorial service for Delbert will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Burlington. Pastor David Yonker will officiate. Military services will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at the church. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. There will be a time of food and fellowship at the church following the service.

There will be a Masonic Service on Friday, October 17, 2014 at First Christian Church (DOC) at 6:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends until 8:30 p.m. Memorials have been established for Toys for Tots, Wounded Warrior Project and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
