YOUNG LAD IS KILLED WHILE HUNTING
Accidental Discharge of a Rifle the Cause.

One of the saddest and most tragic hunting accidents ever happening in this community, occurred late Friday afternoon (September 7, 1928), when Paul Jarvis, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Jarvis, lost his life by the accidental discharge of a rifle in the hands of a boy friend, George Brown, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Brown, the two boys both carrying rifles had gone out to the woods northwest of town to hunt squirrels and were returning home in the late afternoon when the accident took place.

It seems that Paul was walking to the rear and to the left of George when the rifle carried by the latter was accidentally discharged, he cannot tell how. The ball struck Paul over the heart, went through his body and out his back a little to the right side. George ran to where George Kerr not far away was hauling sand and told him of the accident, and together they came to town and Dr. Potter hurried to the scene of the accident, but found that Paul had passed away, evidently living but a few seconds after the ball struck him.

No blame is at all attached to Paul's companion in the sad happening, it was one of those tragedies of life we find hard to understand, The entire community was saddened by the sudden passing of a promising young life. Paul was 16 years old his last birthday, September 4th. He was a member of the sophomore class in high school, a bright boy, often accompanied his father on his trips over the territory covered by Mr. Jarvis, who is employed by the Iowa Southern Utilities Company.

The sincere sympathy of the hosts of friends of the sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Jarvis, and the younger brother who is left, go out to them in their sorrow. And a large measure of sympathy likewise is extended the Brown family in their grief over the sad accident.

The funeral services were held from the family home in Morning Sun, Sunday afternoon (September 9, 1928), conducted by Reverend F. S. Lawler, pastor of St. Mary's Church at Dodgeville. A quartet Mrs. Albin Davis, Mrs. W. S. Brown, W. O. Yohe and C. A. Brown sang, with Mrs. C. A. Brown as accompanist. The pallbearers were classmates of Paul. Hundreds of people attended the funeral. The interment vas at Elmwood cemetery.

Among the out-of-town relatives here Sunday for the funeral were: Mrs. James Scott of Sperry, mother of Mrs. Jarvis; Roy Scott and Wm. Scott and family of Sperry, brothers of Mrs. Jarvis; Mrs. Chester Lee and family of Yarmouth; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hellenthal, Mediapolis, sister of Mrs. Jarvis; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Walker, Mrs. Will Walker, Mr. Virgil Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Walker, Mrs. Chas. Walker, Harlie Walker, William Welch, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hackenberg, Miss Carrie Herr, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Howe, all of Mediapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart, Fairfield; Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Evans and daughter, West Burlington.
