Ruth Louise Bell, of Burlington passed on September 24, 2014 at Great River Hospice House after a gradual decline in health. Born September 18, 1927 she was the daughter of Carl C. and Agatha Stodt Jaeger. She was raised by Hazel Senti, a cousin, on a farm in West Burlington, after the death of her parents. She was baptized in the protestant faith. On June 12, 1949 she married Rod C. Bell and was his loyal and devoted partner until his death on March 31, 2010.
A 1945 graduate of BHS, Ruth was employed as an accountant with Hawkeye Motor Co. for twenty years and Shawgo Realty Co. for 21 years, retiring in 1989.
Ruth was a 50 year member of E.C. Blackmar Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and the American Contract Bridge League as a certified bridge director, attaining the rank of Life Master.
Ruth and her husband Rod were avid golfers, and travelers and were well known in the area for their bridge prowess. Ruth proudly supported Rod in his political and business endeavors and accompanied him to many local events. Though they had no children of their own, mentoring BHS students and supporting teachers became a top priority. After Rod's death she found support from friends, neighbors and displayed a keen mind for crossword puzzles, her computer, and reading. She maintained frequent contact with all those privileged to share her life.
Preceding her in death are her husband, parents, a brother and two cousins she grew up with.
Survivors include three cousins, Sam Senti of Story City, IA, Bruce Senti of Lake Mills, WI, and Steve Senti of Denmark, IA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Burlington Education Scholarship Foundation and Great River Hospice House in Burlington. Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 at Lunning Chapel. The memorial graveside service for Ruth will be 2:00 p.m. Monday Sept. 29 at Aspen Grove Cemetery with the Revs. Susanne Smith and Ralph Andersen officiating.
