Mildred Carol Bied 1932 - 2011

Mildred Carol "Millie" Bied, 79, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at her residence on July 26, 2011, at 1:55 p.m.

Born on April 13, 1932, in Morning Sun, Iowa, she was the daughter of Lee and Ellen Hetherington Stodgell. She married Andy "Dan" Bied on September 11, 1973, in Reno, Nevada. He died on March 25, 1998.

Millie graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1949 and then attended Burlington Junior College. She retired from Champion Spark Plug after 30 years. She treasured the love of her husband, everyone in her family and friends. She received the Governor's Good Neighbor Award in Des Moines on November 10, 1995. She was Grand Marshal in the Steamboat Days Parade in 1998 and was Co-Grand Marshal in the 1998 Christmas Parade in memory of her husband. She was a member of the Art Guild, Des Moines County Historical Society, Associate Life Member (as a widow) of a former POW to the Golden Lion 106th Infantry Divison. She was also a member of the Local 1237 UAW, Burlington Steamboat Days, supported the Gala and was a season ticket holder for Civic Music. Since 1978 she loved to volunteer her time to visit children and shut-ins at the nursing homes during Easter. She loved flowers, hobbies, jazz and traveling. She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by four sisters, Elizabeth (Keith) Renner of Danville, Iowa, Leota (D. Gene) Pilling of Mediapolis, Iowa, Helen Stodgell Baum of Iowa City, Iowa, and Mary Jane (Melvin) Brown of Lakewood, New York; 13 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces & nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, Martha and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral services for Mildred Carol "Millie" Bied will be held on Friday, July 29, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh's Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Judy Ann Morse will officiate. Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.

No formal visitation is planned, friends may call at Prugh's on Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established for Steamboat Days Committee (Dan Bied Memorial Jazz Festival).
