Lester Clarence Hartman 1912 - 1994

Lester C. Hartman Sr., 82, of New London, died at 6:58 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 1994, at the Henry County Health Center.

Born July 23, 1912, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred and Katherine Brookhiser Hartman. On July 20, 1933, he married Winifred Ilene Anhalt in Burlington. She died February 2, 1992.

Mr. Hartman was a truck driver for the IAAP. After his retirement in 1973, he was known as the "horseradish man," distributing his home- made horseradish around southeast Iowa.

He had been a private in Troop K, 113th Cavalry, Iowa National Guard.

Survivors include six sons, Kenneth Hartman of Wapello, Richard Hartman of Fairfield, Fred Hartman of Winfield, Larry Hartman of Oquawka, Illinois, Ronald Hartman of Stronghurst, Illinois, and Dennis Hartman of Morning Sun; two daughters, Alice Wiley of LaHarpe, Illinois, and Judith Strasser of Morning Sun; 35 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence Schnedler and Marcella Bowman, both of Burlington.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, three great-grandchildren, one brother and one sister.

Friends may call after 8 a.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, New London, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Hartman will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Elliott Chapel with the Reverend Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, New London.

A memorial has been established.
